I wanted to experiment a little more with the eggs in baked products concept like yesterday’s breakfast loaf so I tried something a little bit different this time. Instead of using puff pastry, I used pre-made thin crust pizza dough. The awesome thing is that this is much easier to cut into but I still love the texture of the puff pastry more. Pre-made pizza dough however, tends to be larger in size so there would be more servings — just something to keep in mind. It really depends on what would work best for you.
The flavor inspiration was really influenced by the breakfasts I had as a little kid. Both of my parents worked so I would sometimes go back to Taiwan and spend summers with my grandmother. Every morning, I would have rice porridge, some dried pork to go with it, and eggs hard boiled in soy sauce. Sometimes, my grandma would give us a few slices of sweet Chinese sausage or boiled peanuts. I remember the sausage distinctly because she would always eat the sausage with slices of raw garlic. I used to ask my mom why Grandma smelled so funny all the time and it wasn’t until I was older that I connected the dots. Ohhh…it was the garlic all along!
Instead of nauseating your friends, family, and co-workers with raw garlic breath, I added just a touch of garlic powder to preserve the spirit of the dish.
